Telangana has taken a major step toward reshaping India’s basketball landscape with the launch of the Telangana Junior Basketball League (TJBL), a first-of-its-kind grassroots initiative that has already created history by recording franchise sales worth ₹1.48 crore.
Launched by the Telangana Basketball Association (TBA), the league aims to build a structured pathway for young athletes and strengthen the sport’s ecosystem from grassroots to professional levels.
Basketball, increasingly gaining popularity among younger generations, has witnessed rapid growth across Telangana, and the TJBL reflects this expanding sporting culture. Inspired by the success of the Telangana Professional Basketball League (TPBL), the junior league seeks to identify and nurture emerging talent while creating professional opportunities for young players.
The response to the initiative has been overwhelming, with over 3,000 registrations across four categories — Under-15 Boys, Under-15 Girls, Under-18 Boys and Under-18 Girls. A notable feature of the registrations was the strong participation from rural districts and smaller towns, indicating the sport’s growing reach beyond urban centers.
To identify top talent, week-long trials were conducted by the TBA, after which the top 100 players in each category were selected, taking the total shortlisted athletes to 400 players.
The selected players were formally announced and felicitated at Shilpakala Vedika, in the presence of players, parents, coaches and basketball enthusiasts.
The league generated significant excitement during the owners’ auction held at Ridhira Retreat, where ten bidders participated in a competitive process. Six franchises — Hyderabad Hurricanes, Vikarabad Predators, Nalgonda Ninjas, Rangareddy Rulers, Warangal Wildfires and Medak Monsters — were successfully auctioned.
The six teams together fetched a combined value of ₹1.48 crore, making TJBL the first youth basketball league in India to conduct franchise auctions at such a scale.
The upcoming player auction scheduled on May 22 is expected to further strengthen the league’s professional structure and player development ecosystem.
The initiative is being spearheaded by Ambati Prudhvishwar Reddy, Indian National Basketball Team player and General Secretary of the Telangana Basketball Association. Regarded as one of Telangana’s leading basketball figures, Reddy is the only player from the state to represent India internationally and has participated in six international tournaments. He has also played professional basketball in Spain, the United States and Thailand.
Since taking over as General Secretary in 2025, Reddy has introduced several initiatives aimed at developing basketball infrastructure and talent across Telangana. These include coaches and referees clinics, a digital player database and the successful launch of the Telangana Professional Basketball League, where six franchises were sold for ₹1.27 crore.
The association has also introduced a comprehensive development structure through school, junior, college, club and professional basketball leagues, creating a complete pathway for aspiring players.
Speaking about the vision, Reddy said the aim is to transform Telangana into the basketball capital of India and develop future national and international stars.
With record participation, strong investor confidence and growing rural inclusion, Telangana’s basketball movement is rapidly emerging as a model for youth sports development in India.
