Chargesheet filed in Divyanshu Jatrana murder case, six accused still absconding

The Premnagar police have completed the investigation into the murder of BTech student Divyanshu Jatrana and filed a chargesheet in court. The case is related to the killing of the 22-year-old student outside a private university in Premnagar on March 24.

According to superintendent of police (city) Pramod Kumar, chargesheets have been filed against eight accused in different phases. One accused has received interim protection from arrest from the Uttarakhand High Court, while six others are still absconding. Police have announced a reward of Rs 25,000 on each absconding accused and have also started the process of attaching their properties.

The incident took place after a clash between two groups of students over an old rivalry. During the fight, Divyanshu Jatrana, a resident of Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh, was allegedly attacked with hockey sticks, iron rods and wooden sticks. He suffered serious injuries and was first taken to a nearby hospital. Later, he was shifted to Government Doon Medical Hospital, where he died during treatment.

After the incident, Premnagar police registered a case against 15 accused under charges including murder, criminal conspiracy and unlawful assembly. During the investigation, police examined CCTV footage, recorded statements of eyewitnesses and collected other evidence.

The first chargesheet was filed on June 15 against Madhur Khandelwal, Shivam Sharma, Yuvraj Kumar and Ankit Bhardwaj. The second chargesheet was filed on July 20 against Prahlad Raj, Ankur Singh, Vineet Raj and Ritik Raj. Police said efforts are continuing to arrest the remaining accused and complete the legal process in the case.
