Congress objects to detention of DAV college students union president

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE/ Dehradun
The leaders of Uttarakhand Congress have expressed anger at the detention of president of DAV college students union Siddharth Agarwal. The members of the National Students Union of India (NSUI) led by Agarwal were prevented by the police when they tried to burn the effigy of the Technical Education minister Subodh Uniyal near his official residence in Yamuna Colony on Thursday. Agarwal wanted to protest against alleged corruption by the vice chancellor of Uttarakhand Technical University (UTU) Onkar Singh and tampering with the future of the students.
The Congress leaders alleged that the police took Agarwal and other students into detention even as they were trying to register their protest in a peaceful manner. The chief spokesperson of Uttarakhand Congress Garima Dasauni said that the police registered a case under section 151 of BNS.
She said that when the senior leaders were informed about the incident they arrived in the Garhi Cantt police station and registered their protest.
Dasauni said that the president of Mahila Congress Jyoti Rautela, Mahanagar president Jaswinder Singh Gogi, Vineet Bhatt, Robin Tyagi, Mohit Kumar Moni, Ritesh Chetri and others sat on a dharna in the police station.
The Congress leaders also started a march towards the residence of the CM when a case was registered against Agarwal. Dasauni claimed that the police and administration yielded under the pressure of the Congress leaders and unconditionally released Agarwal.
Dasauni said that the incident shows that efforts are being made to stifle the voices in support of students. She said that the Congress is standing shoulder to shoulder with the students and will continue its agitation against corruption in universities.
