Doctors said that they have observed an increase in cases of viral infections and allergies among children due to the temperature variance between day and night. They said that the considerable drop in nighttime temperatures has led to a rise in viral infections, including instances of pneumonia, in children in Dehradun. Doctors advised parents to ensure that children take necessary precautions to help prevent these infections during this period of temperature variance.
Principal medical superintendent at the Deen Dayal Upadhyay District Hospital Dr Manu Jain informed that at the District Hospital outpatient department (OPD), there has been a noticeable increase in viral infection cases among children. Currently, due to the changing temperatures, these cases have risen by 10 to 15 per cent. Children are experiencing symptoms such as cold, cough, fever and various allergies, exacerbated by poor air quality levels following Deepawali. Jain emphasised that during this time, children are more vulnerable to infections. Therefore, parents are urged to ensure their children take appropriate precautions, such as wearing warm clothing and consuming either normal or warm water. He added that with winter approaching, parents should also encourage their children to avoid soft drinks and other cold beverages.
Paediatrician at Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital Dr Vishal Kaushik stated that he has observed a rise in respiratory and viral infections among children due to changing weather conditions and temperature variance between day and night. These infections cause symptoms such as cold, cough and fever, and in some cases, children also develop pneumonia, which can lead to rapid breathing. To prevent this, it is essential for parents to facilitate necessary precautions among children. Kaushik stressed the importance of consulting a pediatrician immediately if a child shows any said symptoms for further testing and treatment. Additionally, during this period, children should wear masks, dress in warm clothing and parents should ensure they stay well-hydrated.
