The State government has claimed that disaster management and relief works are being undertaken on a war footing at a time when various parts of the State have been affected by disasters caused by heavy rains and landslides.

According to officials, out of the total 1,827 roads blocked by debris, 1,747 have been reopened with work underway to reopen the remaining 80 roads. Citing this, the officials said that traffic has been restored on nearly 96 per cent of the roads blocked by landslide and debris so far. Mechanical excavators and other necessary resources had been deployed in advance at sites vulnerable to landslides.

The officials concerned had been directed to take immediate action in case of a road getting blocked. As a result, the blocked roads are being reopened swiftly in the disaster affected areas, the officials claimed. It is pertinent to mention here that Uttarakhand has witnessed more rain so far this year compared to the past many years, which has also resulted in disasters in different parts of the State.

Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has been visiting the disaster affected areas and also monitoring the rescue and relief efforts in the State. Dhami said, “The safety and convenience of the people is the State government’s top priority. We are undertaking consistent monitoring to ensure that roads, the supply of power, drinking water and other essential commodities is restored in the affected areas to prevent any inconvenience to the people. All the departments are working in coordination to ensure effective relief and rescue efforts,” he said.
