MCD strengthens winter relief measures as cold intensifies

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

Dehradun has been experiencing a continuous dip in temperatures over the past few days, prompting the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) to strengthen its winter relief measures to protect residents from the harsh chill, particularly the homeless and those who have to spend the night in open spaces like the workers engaged in government and private works and also the police and others on night duty.

As part of enhancing arrangements, MCD has more than doubled the number of bonfires across the city. Earlier, bonfires were lit at 22 locations; this number has been increased to over 50 locations to provide warmth in vulnerable areas.

In addition to bonfires, all-night shelters in the city have been fully equipped with essential facilities to ensure a safe and warm environment for people without shelter. Special focus has been placed on maintaining cleanliness, availability of bedding and basic amenities at these shelters.

The municipal commissioner, Namami Bansal stated that keeping the severe cold conditions in view, the number of bonfires has been increased, night shelters have been made fully functional and transport support has been ensured to prevent anyone from being exposed to the cold.

The corporation has further clarified that if temperatures drop further, the relief arrangements will be expanded accordingly. At present, continuous monitoring of bonfires and night shelters is being carried out to ensure the effectiveness of the measures across Dehradun.
