The Uttarakhand Special Task Force (STF) arrested a man wanted for a Rs 3.7 crore jewellery heist in Bihar. The accused, identified as Mohammad Shakib alias Rahul, was living under a false identity in the Piran Kaliyar area of Haridwar. He was wanted in connection with an armed robbery that took place at a Tanishq showroom in Purnia, Bihar, in July 2024, the STF senior superintendent of police Navneet Singh Bhullar said.

He informed that Shakib was also allegedly involved in the 2021 murder of a Lok Janshakti Party leader in Bihar, carried out along with his associate Chunmun Jha and other gang members. Shakib had served two years in jail in that case. Following the July 2024 robbery, in which six armed individuals looted jewellery worth Rs 3.7 crore, five of the accused were either killed or jailed. Jha was killed in a police encounter and four others are currently in custody.

Shakib had been absconding since the incident. Bhullar said that Bihar STF had received information that Shakib was residing in the Haridwar district. They contacted the Uttarakhand STF after which, the STF team here located and arrested the accused from the Piran Kaliyar area on Sunday.

The case is registered under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 and Arms Act in Bihar’s Khajanchi Haat police station. Further actions will be taken as per rules, the SSP said.
