Schools & teachers felicitated for nature-based education

Students and teachers from progressive schools in seven districts attended an International Biodiversity Day event organised by the Uttarakhand Biodiversity Board and Nature Science Initiative (NSI) at the Forest Research Institute here on Friday.

Speaking on the occasion, Environment minister Ram Singh Kaira called on students to safeguard the State’s vibrant biodiversity. Soumya Prasad from NSI presented various projects at the event and expressed optimism that it would encourage environmental cooperation among Himalayan States. This year, three schools—GIC Maithana in Chamoli, Beersheba in Pithoragarh, and CSSS in Nainital—received awards at the Himalayan Sustainability Championship.

Additionally, three teachers- Kamalesh Atwal from Nanakmatta Public School (Udhamsingh Nagar), Sarita Negi from Shining Star School (Nainital) and Himani Chimmiwal from Ankuram Global Academy (Nainital) – were honoured for their efforts in incorporating nature-based education in Uttarakhand.

The students present on the occasion opined that India’s major challenges could be addressed if everyone unites to overcome greed, anger, jealousy and divisiveness.
