Women across Uttarakhand are increasingly emerging as agents of economic change, leveraging microfinance to establish small enterprises and strengthen household incomes. From dairy farming and tailoring units to food stalls, handicrafts and retail businesses, access to small loans is helping women create sustainable livelihood opportunities across the State.
Microfinance has become a significant catalyst for financial inclusion in Uttarakhand, particularly in rural and hilly regions where access to formal banking services has traditionally remained limited. By providing easy access to credit, microfinance institutions are enabling women to invest in income-generating activities and become financially independent.
In regions such as Kumaon and Garhwal, women are transforming traditional skills into viable businesses. Dairy farming, food processing, handicrafts, tailoring and small retail ventures are among the sectors witnessing growing participation from women entrepreneurs. The initiative is not only improving family incomes but also enhancing women’s role in household decision-making and community development.
The impact has been particularly visible in remote hill areas where livelihood opportunities are often constrained by geographical challenges and limited market access. Small loans have enabled women to purchase livestock, acquire sewing machines, establish village-level shops and adopt improved agricultural practices, thereby creating stable sources of income.
One such success story is that of Rekha Devi from Jagjeetpur village in Haridwar district. With the support of a microfinance loan from DJT Microfinance, she purchased dairy cattle and started a small dairy farming enterprise. The venture has since grown into a dependable source of income for her family.
“I always wanted to contribute to my family’s income but lacked the financial resources to start a business. The loan helped me purchase dairy cattle and begin dairy farming. Today, the income supports household expenses and my children’s education. It has given me confidence and financial security,” Rekha Devi said.
Experts believe that the growing success of microfinance in Uttarakhand underlines the importance of combining access to finance with livelihood development and skill enhancement. While the loans may be small, their impact on economic empowerment and social development has been substantial.
As more women embrace entrepreneurship, microfinance continues to play a crucial role in strengthening rural economies, improving living standards and contributing to Uttarakhand’s inclusive growth story.
