As part of the National Commission for Women’s campaign “Mahila Aayog Aapke Dwar,” Uttarakhand State Commission for Women (USCW) organised a public hearing in Champawat on Thursday during which a total of 18 complainants had presented their grievances to the commission. Of these, 14 cases were resolved on the spot while four complex family disputes were forwarded to the commission headquarters for further action.
Informing this, the chairperson, USCW Kusum Kandwal said that one complainant had expressed her dissatisfaction with the investigation into her brother’s murder committed during Holi. “In view of the seriousness of the case, I directed the superintendent of police (SP), Champawat to immediately replace the investigating officer (IO) and ensure a thorough and fair investigation,” Kandwal added.
She further said that a young woman had presented her ordeal of being assaulted and molested by her own brothers while they were inebriated. In response, she issued strict instructions to police officers to take robust legal action against the accused and to prioritise the safety of the victim.
She further emphasised the importance of setting up internal complaints committees (ICC) in every government and private department to ensure swift justice in cases of abuse against women in the workplace.
Also, she highlighted the need for greater awareness of the services available to women through the 181 helpline, One Stop Centres (OSCs) and the District Probation Officer (DPO).
