A Dehradun resident has reportedly lost Rs 14.6 lakh to a fraud committed by a person impersonating a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officer on WhatsApp. Ranjit Singh Chauhan reported that he received a voice call on January 6 from an unknown number claiming to be from CBI headquarters, Mumbai. The caller told him that his Aadhaar card was being misused in a money laundering case linked to Naresh Goyal and also warned that his family was in danger.

The fraudsters demanded that Chauhan transfer money to multiple bank accounts to protect his family and avoid legal action. In fear and under mental stress, Chauhan transferred Rs 3.10 lakh to the first account and later Rs 11.5 lakh to a second account. However, the fraudsters did not provide any receipts for the second transaction, making him realise that he had been cheated. In total, Chauhan lost Rs 14.6 lakh in this online scam. After this he registered the complaint at the cyber crime police station Dehradun. The police have registered a case and are investigating the incident.
