Investigation has started in the case of a woman who died after a surgical bandage was left in her abdomen after a surgery, Dehradun’s chief medical officer Dr Manoj Kumar Sharma said. It is important to mention that 26-year-old Jyoti Prajwal, a resident of Lakkhibagh, who underwent a cesarean section at the Mother Care Centre (Singh Eye Hospital) in Araghar area of Dehradun.
Prajwal delivered her son on January 29 and was discharged four days later. However, about 10 days after the delivery, she began experiencing severe abdominal pain. Despite several examinations, doctors were unable to determine the cause of her discomfort. When her condition worsened, her family returned her to the same hospital, but she was eventually referred to Graphic Era Hospital. It was then discovered that a bandage used during her surgery had been left in her abdomen, resulting in a serious infection that ultimately caused her death late on Sunday.
In response to this tragedy, Prajwal’s family protested by placing her body in the hospital premises, accusing the hospital administration of negligence resulting in the death. In light of this situation, the CMO took cognisance of the matter and formed a committee to investigate. Sharma stated that cases like this are typically handled by the National Medical Commission (NMC). He acknowledged that this incident has raised concerns for both the family and the public, prompting the Health department to take immediate action. He stated that the hospital in question has been sealed and a three-member committee has been established to investigate the matter. The committee began its investigation on Friday and a report is expected within three to four days. Following this, the department will submit the report to the NMC for further action. Sharma emphasised that in such type of cases, if the doctor is found guilty, their medical license will be revoked.
