The mortal remains of the veteran industrialist and former chairman of the Tata Group Ratan Tata were taken from his house in a flowers-decked hearse to the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) at Nariman Point in south Mumbai where it was kept for people to pay their last respects. Earlier, the 86-year-old industrialist- known for his business acumen and philanthropic activities- had died at the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on Wednesday night. He is credited with transforming the Tata Group into a globally renowned conglomerate.
The Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in paying homage to the departed industrialist. He described Tata as a visionary business leader, a compassionate soul and an extraordinary human being. He also said that though he was principally known for providing stable leadership to one of India’s oldest and the most prestigious business houses, his contribution had gone far beyond the boardroom. He had endeared himself to the people at large thanks to his humility, kindness and commitment, PM tweeted.
As the news of Tata’s demise spread, a large number of people from different walks of life gathered outside his house since early Thursday morning to pay tribute to the venerated industrialist. .Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar was one of the early visitors.
